July 2005 Dealer of the Month
We apologize for taking so long to post the Dealer of the Month. We had an eventful season and we are now feverishly working on the events for the 2006 season.
SuperMoto Canada had the pleasure of interviewing Peter Koch of Cycle World for our Dealer of the Month title. Cycle World is located at 5312 Dundas Street West in Toronto. Cycle World is a multi-line dealership in Toronto that sells everything from Motorcycles, parts and accessories to power sports products as well as related power equipment. We asked Peter to tell us a little about the company.
SM: Can you tell us a little about when Cycle World began?
CW: Cycle World started in 1965, we progressed from there and we added a second store in 1972, at our east end location. We had a third store at 228 Steeles, but that got bought out for a Mercedes Benz dealership. We carry four brands of motorcycles (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki & Yamaha) plus we are carrying the Hell Bound Steel Choppers brought in from California. We also carry Snowmobiles from Polaris and Yamaha as well as ATVs from Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Polaris.
SM: Any other types of equipment?
CW: All types of high-powered equipment like Snow blowers generators, tillers lawn mowers and such. Snowmobiles in Toronto are a difficult item to sell so we carry snow blowers and lawn mowers. We need volume so the person who buys a bike is also likely to buy a lawn mower. We have a full range of sport equipment both new and used so we can cater to everyones budget.
SM: Just recently SuperMoto hosted a Track day for Suzuki Canada in appreciation of DRZ 400 SM owners on the Mosport Development Track. The track was perfect to explore the potential of the DRZ; can you tell us what the DRZ did in terms of sales?
CW: We sold a few but we didnt sell as many as we would like to sell. The initial reaction to the Bike was very positive but a lot of people just didnt follow through with the purchase. The people that did buy them however were surprised how well it worked as a sport bike.
SM: I my self had the opportunity to spend some time on the DRZ at the Mosport Development Track and I was amazed at what it was capable of. What is your opinion of the Bike?
CW: I do not know what the future of that Motorcycle is or what the potential is, I think they will continue to bring it in, but I think a lot of it has to do with word of mouth as to what it can do, rather than the advertising they’re trying to fit it into to make it do something.
SM: Supermoto Canada is looking to assist in track days where people can come out and try out Bikes; introduce customers to the sport and hopefully motivate them to sign up for a class that they can ride in at the SM events. Do any of your Staff race?
CW: There are a couple of guys here that like to get out for track days at Mosport and Shannonville, but I am not sure if any of them actually race Supermoto. I am sure that they would like to try it out though.
SM: Do you own and or ride a bike yourself?
CW: I do not own a bike myself but every once in a while I take a bike from the store for a ride.
SM: Just out of curiosity what kind of bike do you like to ride?
CW: The last bike I took for a ride was a Kawasaki ZX 12.
SM: So may I assume that you like to go fast?
CW: No it is not that it is more the smooth delivery of the performance and the knowledge that you have the horsepower on tap to leave everybody behind.
SM: I agree riding a bike with the knowledge that the power to out accelerate every one in a twist off the throttle, is the true King of the Road feeling.
CW: Exactly and I feel that I do not need to prove myself at every traffic light.
SM: Have you always been with Cycle World?
CW: Yes, I started working part-time when I was still in school and after finishing my education I started full-time with Cycle World, where I worked my way up to the position of General Manager of both the East and West location.
SM: And presumably do so until you are ready to retire?
CW: Yes, but that still a couple of years down the road.
SM: We at SuperMoto Canada would like to thank you for your time to do this interview and of course for Cycle Worlds ongoing support for the Sport of SuperMoto.
CW: You are welcome and we at Cycle World would like to wish SuperMoto Canada all the best for the future and hopefully the sport will develop to its potential in North America.
